Finca Portizuelo is a Boutique Hotel focused on ecological and sustainable tourism. Learn more about its Bio-Construction.

Located in a unique place on the Cantabrian coast, it offers a space to rest in contact with nature and enjoy the wide range of options available in the area.

We have set out to provide quality hotel and restaurant services and promote health, well-being, arts and ecology.

To do this, we renovated a property that had been abandoned for years. Each aspect of the rehabilitation was based on respect for the environment and the objective of maximum possible sustainability, without compromising the best comfort and well-being benefits.

To this end, we applied bioconstruction principles and, in that context, we use natural materials that are harmless to health and environment. Likewise, we minimize the environmental impact of the activity thanks to the use of renewable energy sources, and we hope to be able to completely dispense with non-renewable energy in the near future.

We have prepared an organic garden of fruit and vegetables with which we make jams, smoothies and cakes that we offer at our breakfasts. In order to rationalize the consumption of drinking water, we collect rainwater and use it for toilet cisterns, watering the garden and cleaning outdoor spaces. We have our own treatment plant in which wastewater is purified before infiltrating it into the land. A geothermal heating and hot water system ensures an excellent level of comfort with minimal environmental impact. In addition, we transform organic garden and kitchen waste into compost. A small flock of sheep maintains part of the farm and provides us with fertilizer for the garden.

The rehabilitation works (2012 – 2014) were carried out with an approach oriented towards ecology and sustainability and, to the greatest extent possible, ecological materials and technologies with low environmental impact were used. The structural woods that can be seen in rooms and common spaces are FSC certified for sustainable management; the drain downpipes were made with PVC-free polypropylene pipe, and the electrical installation with halogen-free cables; the floor and wall coverings are of natural stones, marble, clay and lime plaster; the original walls were filled with lime mortar and covered with ecological plaster and cellulose panels; silicate mineral paints and open-pore water-based varnish were used, free of toxic substances; we have minimized the use of electronic and wireless devices in order to avoid, as much as possible, electromagnetic fields; thermostatic taps were installed, and for interior and exterior lighting we mainly used low-consumption LED bulbs. The insulation of the building was done on the façade, with natural cork and lime plaster.

The surrounding environment was rehabilitated and conditioned to create parking spaces, gardens, terrace-solarium, fruit and vegetable orchards. We have a large plot of land for our small flock of sheep and their sheepdogs. In addition, we have created a 2.5 hectare park in which we planted more than 30 native and exotic tree species.

For these and some other reasons that you will discover on your next visit, Finca Portizuelo is a special place, for special people.
